Updated: Freezing For A Reason At Shiver On River

Buchanan, Tenn.—Despite the bitter cold, a number of hardy souls were on hand for today’s “Shiver On The River” at Paris Landing State Park and a total $8,462 was raised (compared to last year’s total of $7,500). It was the coldest ever for the 9th annual event and organizers told participants just dipping their toes would be just fine considering the weather conditions. Eighteen brave people walked into the water, with a handful walking up to their knees. Winners of Best Costume were: First, Dawn Hurney, dressed like an ice cube; Second, Donna Craig and Randi French, duck hunters; and third, Barb and Steve Matlock penguins. Group awards for money raised: First, Alpha and Omega, $250; second, CCHS, $222. Individual awards for money raised: First, Hurney with $2,455; Second, Craig with $1,385; Third, French with $425.
Both the Henry County EMS and Rescue Squad were on there, if needed, and Monte Starks of the Rescue Squad was also stationed in the water in his wet suit. All proceeds go to the REAL Hope Youth Center. Organizers were pleasantly surprised by the number of participants and spectators were attended the event. A New Year’s Day brunch was held for participants at the Paris Landing Inn after the event.
