Students Receive Scholarships To Travel Abroad

hollow-rock-bruceton

Ten Hollow Rock – Bruceton Central High students recently received checks for $285 each to go towards expenses for their upcoming travel service learning experiences in Costa Rica and/or Guatemala. The money raised for these scholarships came from teacher Jenna Patton who allocates proceeds from her permanent jewelry sales to help offset the costs related to the students’ commitment to spend a school break in service internationally.

Patton is co-leading the Global Citizen Adventure Corps programs in Costa Rica June 26 – July 2 and in Guatemala October 13-19. Participants from Weakley County Schools will be joining the Central volunteers. Students bound for Costa Rica previously worked for tips at the Lyons Den while those heading to Guatemala are currently selling soaps and other products from Buff City Soap and coffee from Vantage Coffee Roasters to help with their expenses. (To support these efforts, email Patton at pattonj@hrbk12.org for details.)

Global Citizen Adventure Corps, co-founded by educators Stacie Freeman and Julie Hill, is a nonprofit to assist students from rural and economically disadvantaged areas in overcoming barriers to traveling to and learning from other cultures. All programs include the opportunity to earn transferable college credit from Bethel University, service projects that support UN Sustainable Development Goals, and access to scholarships. To earn a scholarship, a commitment of 100 hours in local and in-country community service is required.
