Dresden, Tenn.–The Weakley County School Board affirmed its support for traditional public education with the passing of a significant resolution during Thursday night’s board meeting held at Sharon School. The resolution, passed unanimously by all members present, opposes Governor Lee’s Education Freedom Act and the expansion of Education Savings Accounts and emphasizes the profound impact of traditional public education in rural communities.
The resolution comes at a critical time as policymakers consider legislation that could impact the funding and governance of public schools. The document highlights the concerns regarding the potential negative impacts that the Education Freedom Act and expansion of Education Savings Accounts [ESAs] will have on students, teachers, schools, and communities. It urges the Tennessee General Assembly to carefully consider the financial implications of the act on public school districts, and advocates for prioritizing measures that support traditional public education.
Several school districts across the state have spoken out in similar resolutions to the General Assembly. District 6 Board Member Steve Vantrease spearheaded consideration of the local resolution for the Weakley County School Board.
“Legislation that diverts funding away from traditional public schools is not a good idea, bad public policy,” Vantrease said. “Traditional public schools serve all students – regardless of their personal situations, abilities, or challenges. We must prioritize the future of our students and communities by ensuring that resources remain invested where they are needed most.”
Board Chairman Josh Moore of District 9 expressed his commitment, saying, “Public schools are the bedrock of our community, providing equal opportunities for every student to succeed. This resolution spells out our unwavering support for public education and sends a clear message that we will continue to defend the interests of our students and families.”
76th District State Representative Tandy Darby weighed in with his belief in traditional public education, commenting that, “Growing up and raising a family in a rural community, I know the value of traditional public education. It’s something I believe in, and it’s what our district needs. I believe in policies that prioritize the strength and integrity of traditional public education.”
Director of Schools Jeff Cupples underscored the importance of advocating for policies that support and protect traditional public schools.
“Our district is earning recognition on the regional, state, and national level through tireless efforts to bridge learning gaps and achieve excellence. This legislation will undermine the upward trajectory of our success by diverting funding through voucher programs. I stand with our school board members who support traditional public education and the students, faculty, staff, and families who would be negatively affected,” said Director Cupples.
