Paris, Tenn.–Restoration of Governor Thomas Rye’s unique grave marker at Maplewood Cemetery is complete and the results are impressive, to say the least. The Paris/Henry County Bicentennial Committee donated $800 to the Henry Co. Cemetery Committee to complete cleaning of the marker, which is shaped like a judicial bench in commemoration of Gov. Rye’s career in the law. Gov. Rye and his family lived on N. Poplar St. in Paris and he was the 32nd Tennessee Governor. He received his place in American history by serving as the Governor of the State of Tennessee during World War I, from 1915 to 1919. Gov. Rye’s family, including his wife, Bettie, his son Paul and daughter Nell are also buried in the family plot. The graves are surrounded by ginkco trees. The work restoring the marker was done by Marge Barrows and Susan Stewart.
