Union City, Tenn.–Union City High School has received confirmation that it is indeed a special place.

Principal Jacob Cross was recently notified that UCHS had been deemed an accredited institution for an amazing 100th year.

Cognia – a non-profit, non-governmental organization that has replaced SACS as the industry leader while accrediting primary and secondary schools throughout the United States – acknowledged the significant milestone with a banner and framed certificate, celebrating the accomplishment.

“In today’s world of overnight startups, reinvented industries, and online commerce, very few organizations can claim the distinction of 100 years of service and excellence,” Cognia President and CEO Mark A. Elgart wrote to Cross in a congratulatory letter. “With a focus on school improvement, your institution continues to demonstrate an unwavering commitment, striving to help all students reach their potential.”

“Expectations, standards, and practices have certainly changed in 100 years. But what hasn’t changed is the dedication of your community of educators to meet the many challenges along the way. We commend your entire faculty, staff, and community, who share in this achievement.

Accreditation has several benefits in education, most notably assuring students and stakeholders of the quality and continuous improvement of the institution.

UCHS has long demonstrated a wide range of academic success during its existence, regularly ranking among the state’s best in test scores while also preparing its students for their professional future.

“While accreditation is not required, it is certainly a means to display to our parents and community that we are providing a top-tier educational experience to our students,” Cross said.

“Cognia is the standard bearer for accreditation programs in the nation. We invite them into UCHS as a respected third party to give us an honest evaluation of our strengths and point out areas where we need improvement.”

Elgart was generous in his praise of the Purple and Gold.

“At Cognia, we believe knowledge is opportunity. At Union City High School, you and your staff continue to create opportunities that propel learners toward college and career readiness,” he continued. “We’re honored to have been a part of your improvement journey, and we look forward to continuing our work together.

“Celebrate your accomplishment far and wide – it is truly something to be proud of in your community and beyond.”
