Both UT Martin Track Teams Find Success At Different Meets

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field programs split up its squads over the weekend to find success at both the WashU Distance Carnival and the Joey Hayes Invitational.

While the majority of the squad represented the Skyhawks at the Joey Haines Invitational hosted by Southeast Missouri, some of the team’s distance runners went a little further north into Saint Louis to compete in the WashU Distance Carnival.

WashU Distance Carnival Meet Highlights

  • Sophomore Lydia Tankersley posted one of the fastest times in the 1500m field with a third-place finish. Her time of 4:25.23 bested her previous PR by over 20 seconds.
  • Sophomore Will Cahill finished fourth in the men’s 5k with a time of 14:21.57. His time finished just 0.47 seconds off his personal best.
  • Graduate Luke McNair wasn’t far behind Cahill, finishing two spots behind in seventh place with a time of 14:23.2. His time shattered his previous outdoor PR time by 13 seconds.

Joey Haines Invitational Highlights

  • Junior Darius Holland was impressive for the Skyhawks by claiming a first-place finish in the men’s long jump on Saturday. His winning attempt came with a leap of 7.34m on his second attempt.
  • Sophomore Sam Shuman finished third in the men’s 1500m with a PR time of 4:11.54.
  • Sophomore Lisha McKenzie finished runner-up in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 14.78 seconds.
  • Freshman Ja’Kobe Ward was impressive for the Skyhawks in both the 100m and 200m dashes by setting PRs. In the 100m, Ware came in fifth with a time of 10.86 seconds. Then in the 200m, he finished sixth with a mark of 22.49 seconds.
  • Sophomore Rita Eimer posted a runner-up finish in the women’s 800m with a time of 2:18.08 to record a new PR.
  • Freshman Maggie Roy was also strong in the women’s 800m by coming in fourth with a time of 2:18.56.
  • Junior Lilia Alvarez paced the Skyhawks in the women’s 5k by finishing in third-place with a time of 17:42.29 to set a new PR.
  • Junior Cole Davis posted another runner-up performance for the Skyhawks in the men’s 5k with a time of 14:52.38. The time ranked as a new PR.

UT Martin will return to action at the Rhodes 7-Way Meet on Friday, April 14.
