Kentucky Snow & Ice Team Out In All 12 Western Counties

ky-crews

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 Snow and Ice Team reports trucks are out treating highways in all 12 of Kentucky’s westernmost counties.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect through 9 a.m., Tuesday.

The National Weather Service indicates total sleet and snow accumulations up to 1/2 inch and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch or greater across portions of west Kentucky and southern Illinois. The NWS also noted that difficult travel conditions are likely as roadways turn icy.

While not on a scale of the ice storm of 2009, this system has the potential to create difficult travel conditions.  Just before 8 p.m., KYTC District 1 crews indicated precipitation was transitioning to sleet more quickly than expected.

KYTC District 1 Crews are on the road spot treating in Trigg County and Calloway County.  All other counties have trucks out spreading salt.  Crews will mainly concentrate on “A” Snow Priority Routes, which include Interstates, parkways, and other 4-lane highways, as well as some 2-lane U.S. Highways.

KYTC engineers urge motorists to carefully evaluate their plans for Monday night and Tuesday morning to avoid unnecessary travel.

KYTC District 1 is responsible for 2,835 miles of highway in McCracken, Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, Fulton, Graves, Calloway, Trigg, Lyon, Crittenden, Livingston, and Marshall Counties.

KYTC District 1 will provide updates from time to time as the winter mix moves across the region.  A second round of wintry mix is expected to roll through around 4 a.m., CST.

Motorists are reminded to monitor area news media and the National Weather Service at www.weather.gov/PAH.  Information on travel conditions in Kentucky and neighboring states can be found at goky.ky.gov.  Info on snow priority routes is available at snowky.ky.gov.
