BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin graduate safety Ty Woods was named Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player and Newcomer of the Week after a strong showing in a win over Tennessee State on Saturday.
Woods, a transfer from Delta State, tallied five tackles, including a tackle for loss, had a pass breakup and intercepted a pass that he returned 39 yards for a touchdown in UT Martin’s 20-3 win at Tennessee State. The interception, his third of the season, came late in the first quarter and put the Skyhawks ahead 14-0.
The Birmingham native became the second Skyhawk to be named a player of the week in multiple categories, joining fellow graduate cornerback Shaun Lewis who also garnered defensive and newcomer honors in Week 1. In total, the Skyhawks have picked up 16 OVC weekly honors this season.
