Sprague’s Big Showing Highlights UT Martin Rifle Opener

MURRAY, Ky. – Junior Rachel Sprague managed the highest aggregate score out of any of the 15 participants during today’s University of Tennessee at Martin rifle season-opener, which was held against Murray State at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range.

Sprague’s 1,163 combined points edged out Murray State’s Kylie Wright for the highest individual score as the Falls Creek, Pa. native tallied team-highs of 579 points in smallbore and 584 points in air rifle.

As a team, the Skyhawks accumulated 4,558 points – tallying 2,254 points in smallbore and 2,304 points in air rifle. Murray State collected the head-to-head win after it accounted for 4,601 aggregate points (2,271 smallbore, 2,330 air rifle).

All nine UT Martin student-athletes on the roster were in action today, including a trio of freshmen who made their collegiate debuts (Alayna Walther, Jesse Chamberlain, Victoria Petersen).

The Skyhawks’ smallbore lineup consisted of Sprague (579), Walther (564), Jennifer Plocinik (561), Nick Fares (550) and Kalen Royal (536). The trio of Chamberlain (557), Abigail Donald (537) and Rachel Mills (516) also represented UT Martin this afternoon.

In air rifle, Sprague’s 584 led the way as Plocinik’s 577, Fares’ 574, Walther’s 569 and Royal’s 557 completed the Skyhawk scoring lineup. Competing individually was Mills (561), Chamberlain (560), Donald (556) and Petersen (550).

Following Sprague in the aggregate column was Plocinik (1,138), Walther (1,133), Fares (1,124), Chamberlain (1,117), Donald (1,093), Royal (1,093) and Mills (1,077) amongst those who competed in both guns.

UT Martin will get a rematch against the Racers next week as the Skyhawks travel back to Murray for a matchup on Sunday, Oct. 17.
