Union City, Tenn.–Union City advanced to the District 13A Volleyball Tournament semifinals with a 3-0 victory over visiting West Carroll Monday night.
The Lady Tornadoes can earn a spot in the tourney championship game tonight by beating Westview in the second of two semis at 6:30 at Gibson County High School.
UC (11-8) and Martin (15-3) split a pair of regular-season matches – each winning on its homecourt. Tonight’s winner will move into Thursday’s finals and also secure a spot in next week’s regional tournament.
The Twister girls, seeded third in the postseason, swept West Carroll for the third time in as many meetings Monday to advance.
Union City won 25-16, 25-10 and 27-25.
Raegan Taylor handed out 10 assists, came up with seven digs and accounted for four kills for the Lady Tornadoes vs. WC. Anna Cheatham pounded 15 kills and served up seven of UC’s 13 aces, while Emma Powell was responsible for eight assists.
Kaigan Davis had five kills.
“I was excited for the girls to walk out with a win in the first round of districts and for our five seniors to win their final home match,” said UC head coach Jessica Graham, who lauded Wade, Cheatham and Taylor for their efforts.
The win marks the eighth time in the 10-year history of the program that Union City has triumphed in the first round of the district tournament.
