Union City, Tenn.–Art students at Union City High School have had their eyes opened wide to an exhibit of self-taught artists at Discovery Park of America in recent weeks.

Hilary Webb’s UCHS classes have made the short trip to DPA to witness the noted Southern Artist Showcase Exhibit in Art Hall on the park’s sprawling campus.

The exhibit features “The Caldwell Collection, Works by Southern Self-taught Artists” and is on loan to DPA from the West Tennessee Regional Art Center (WTRAC) in Humboldt.

Included in the display is artwork by various Southern artists, including Ludie Amos (1935), Jimmy Lee Sudduth (1910-2007), and Burlon Craig (1914-2002). Each of those artists were self-taught — embracing their passion in lieu of any formal training – with all showcasing unique styles based on those who influenced them.

Mrs. Webb’s classes received an informative lesson about the exhibit and featured artists from Polly Brasher – DPA’s Director of Education – during their visit.

Students in each class were also led in an art activity that demonstrated the primitive and simplistic qualities of many self-taught artists.

The WTRAC collection was donated by Dr. Benjamin and Gertrude Caldwell for the purpose of cultural education for people of all ages throughout West Tennessee.

The exhibition will be open through Sept. 27 at DPA and is included with park admission or membership.
