HCMC Pauses Use Of J&J Vaccine

hcmc-2-4

Paris, Tenn.–Henry County Medical Center in Paris is following the CDC and state guidelines in halting use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine.

Henry County Medical Center is aware of the reports from the FDA and CDC to pause administration of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine out of an abundance of caution due to six reported nationwide cases of Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis.  It is an evolving situation that HCMC is monitoring closely.

“Per the Tennessee Department of Health’s recommendations, we have appropriately marked the remaining Johnson and Johnson vaccine as ‘Do Not Use’ and continue its storage in the appropriate temperature settings,” said Director of Pharmacy Paula Bell.

As described in the Joint FDA and CDC news release, patients who have received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine and experience the following symptoms should seek medical attention with their Healthcare Provider or the nearest Emergency Room:

  • severe headache
  • abdominal pain
  • leg pain
  • shortness of breath

These severe symptoms that may indicate a blood clot are being reported by the FDA to appear between one to three weeks after the vaccination with the average presentation at nine days after the vaccination.

Meanwhile, HCMC has fully vaccinated approximately 5,000 people, helping Henry County achieve an almost 30% vaccination rate for at least one dose of a vaccine.  This is one of the highest in the state.
