Dyersburg, Tenn.–An off-duty Dyersburg Police officer stopped a domestic assault in progress. Marlek Kirk, age 23, Dyersburg, was arrested on charges of carjacking, domestic assault and evading arrest and additional charges may be filed.

On Monday at approximately 6:26 p.m., a Dyersburg Police Officer, who had just completed his shift at work, was driving home on East Court Street and observed a vehicle pulled off on the side of the road on Reynolds Street. The officer observed a male outside of the vehicle beating a female with his closed fists striking the female victim in her head and body.

The officer turned around to intervene when the male subject, later identified as Kirk, jumped into the vehicle and fled the scene leaving the victim on the side of the road. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop, and the car came to a stop near Barney Street. The officer was able to take Kirk into custody without further incident.

While the officer was clearing the vehicle for other passengers, he discovered a 3-year-old child in the backseat floorboard. The victim ran to the location of the traffic stop to get her son who was unharmed.

Kirk is charged with carjacking, domestic assault, and evading arrest. Additional charges may be filed upon completion of the investigation.
