UC Band Shines At Super Regional

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Performing on their biggest stage this fall, the Union City High School marching band put on a show worthy of multiple accolades.

The Marching Golden Tornadoes won Outstanding Musical Performance, Outstanding Visual Performance and Outstanding General Effect and capped off their show by claiming the overall Class A championship of the Bands of America Super Regional in St. Louis Saturday.

As an added reward, Union City earned the right to march in exhibition late Saturday night in front of a capacity crown at the Dome of America Center.

“A great example of how hard work pays off,” UCHS band director Jason Deem said of his group’s noteworthy performance. “We were well-prepared and ready.

“Our fall production show is designed for this type arena and we no doubt showed well, according to the judges. It’s a true challenge to put on a show of this nature, and I’m extremely proud of the product we put on the field.”

Deem said the Marching Tornadoes competed against bands similar to the enrollment of Union City High School and said they “measured up to the criteria of BOA judges.”

“They have judges from all over the country, like California and Florida, and even had one from Ontario. There were all widely- and highly regarded.”

Union City will now turn its attention to its final two contests of the marching season — this week at the Mid-South Marching Contest at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville and Nov. 2 at the Contest of Champions in Murfreesboro on the Middle Tennessee State University campus.

“I really hope and believe this past weekend can be a jump-start and a stepping stone to us finishing the season on a high note,” he said. “This past weekend was the first of three straight competitions at bigger stadiums, and I’m hopeful we show up well at the last two – just as we did in St. Louis.

“We’ve celebrated our accomplishment from last weekend, and now we’re ready to get to work on getting better for Austin Peay and MTSU.”

The Marching Tornadoes are scheduled to take the field for preliminary competition at APSU Saturday at 3:45 p.m.
