Excel Groundbreaking Held In Union City

Union City, Tenn.–Union City and Obion County officials, along with owners of Excel Boats, were on hand for Tuesday afternoon’s groundbreaking ceremonies for Excel Boats. The company is locating in the former Vanity Fair building at 601 Sherwood Drive in Union City.
Speakers at the ceremony included Union City Mayor Terry Hailey, Obion County Economic Development Chair Art Sparks and Excel CEO Glenn Foreman.
Officials from the Excel Arkansas and Utah facilities were on hand and a more formal Grand Opening event will be held in the spring. Excel officials had said earlier that the plant plans to employ some 175 people.
Foreman recounted how he started the company in his garage long ago in Arkansas and told of its expansion over the years.
Sparks told the crowd that when talks began over a year ago county economic development officials asked, “What can we do to forge an agreement between Union City and Obion County to bring Excel Boats here? And thankfully, we had a facility available.”
Excel officials said plans now are for the plant to be completed in March, with manufacturing to begin in the spring.
