Paris, Tenn.—Workers have been busy constructing a new playground at First Christian Church in downtown Paris and with the demolition this week of the ‘blue house’ where church youth have met for years, other changes are in store.
“We’ve got a lot going on right now,” Rev. Cory Glover said.
A new playground is being constructed on the east side of the church and a white fence was recently erected around the play area. Church volunteers have been busy removing items from the ‘blue house’ for its demolition this week and Glover said that area will be transformed into an outdoor pavilion where musical and other presentations can be held.
The church also is expanding its parking space, which has been lacking for members for years, Glover said, and has plans for expanding its handicapped accessibility for the main church building.
Demolition of the ‘blue house’ was deemed necessary as ongoing structural issues became more predominant, Glover said. “We had been making improvements in the house over the years, but the structurally, it just deteriorated more rapidly than we had wanted,” he said.
Young members of the church have been lamenting the demolition of the ‘blue house’, he said. “There are a lot of memories for them in that building and they’ve been taking to Instagram to express how sad they are.”
But, he said, there will be an entire floor dedicated to youth and youth programs inside the main church building.
“Everything is going to look great when it’s all done,” Glover said.
First Christian Church is located at 101 S. Poplar St.
