Paris, Tenn.—The Henry County Schools board of education opened its April meeting with a moment of silence for the young Lakewood student who died Wednesday night and her family. Director of Schools Dr. Brian Norton also asked that Lakewood students, faculty and staff be remembered in these days following the girl’s death.

During reports at the meeting, Maintenance Supervisor John Akers reported that a certificate of occupancy for the newly-built bus garage was approved by the Paris Fire Marshal “so basically, it’s our building now. The parking lot is really the only thing left to complete.”

The board approved first reading for the new policy governing the use of personal communication devices after changes were included. Student Representative Pierce Rose said the changes were suggested by high school administration and students. The major change would allow high school students to use their devices before first bell, during class transition and during lunch. He said consequences also were loosened for violations.

Student Ambassadors Lilly Underwood, Natalie Clark, Pamela Lowe and Delia McDevitt were introduced to the board. McDevitt noted that students feel “It’s important to have our phones in these times to call our parents, if we need to.”

Board Attorney Rob Whitfield suggested that confiscated phones be recycled instead of kept by the school.
