Paris Academy for the Arts is pleased to announce the opening reception for an art show featuring nationally known painter and sculptor Prescott Smith on Sunday, February 18 from 2 pm to 4 pm. The show will be on display in the gallery space at Paris Academy for the Arts at 402 Lee Street, Paris, TN, through April 27, 2024.
Originally from New Orleans, and a recent resident of Henry County, Prescott Smith was a sculptor and painter of modern art, gaining a national reputation. He studied formally with John McCrady, a well-known southern painter and printmaker, and renowned Taos-based sculptor Ted Egri.
Smith’s sculptures were worked primarily in stainless steel, with many featuring faces, some of which were sculpted in clay. His paintings are brightly colored, depicting many unique and abstract figures, very reminiscent of Joan Miro, the Spanish Surrealist and Abstract Expressionist.
Prescott’s works are owned by, and have been featured in, many national modern art museums and galleries including: Centennial Art Center in Nashville, Alice Bingham Gallery in Memphis, Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, Florida, Big Rock Garden Park in Bellingham, Washington, and Sculpture International in Palo Alto, California.
The Opening Reception will feature a short talk by Dan Knowles, the curator of the show, and will include refreshments. The public is invited.
