Paris, Tenn.–The Colonial Dames will hold a House Marking Dedication Ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at the Alexander-Townsend house belonging to Tommy and Melanie Townsend at 7115 Hwy. 54 in Como.
The original house was built between 1835 and 1850 on a 1,000 acre plantation owned by Thomas Cowan. The Arthur Alexander family purchased the home in the late 1800s. It was one a stagecoach stop and on November 30, 1838, James K. Polk spent the night there while campaigning for governor of Tennessee. Polk, of course, was elected governor and went on to be elected President of the United States.
