
Paris, Tenn.—At a short meeting of the Henry County Commission Thursday night, commissioners approved the property tax rate for Henry County, approved the county budget for the Fiscal Year starting July 1 2020, and heard from a family who was rescued from their home Wednesday night by county agencies due to flash flooding.
Thursday night’s meeting was recessed from Monday evening.
The commission approved the property tax rate of at $1.8933 on each $100 of taxable property and is broken down this way: county general fund, $.5195; debt service .0181; education funds, 1.0805; highway fund .2209; and solid waste fund .0543.
The annual budget was approved, showing a total county general fund of $11,991,493, with other funds approved including HCMC $98,518,903; general capital projects $841,875; debt service $2,753,435; general purpose education fund $28,877,194; highway department $5,755,445; solid waste $675,242.
The Nored family attended the meeting to ask for help with an ongoing drainage problem on their property at 855 Whitlock Rd.
County Emergency Management Agency Director Ron Watkins said his office, the Henry Co. Sheriff’s Office, Whitlock Fire Department and the County Highway Department helped the family evacuate their home Wednesday night during the major rain event.
“We had an unusually significant event with the rainfall we had,” he said. “I’ve heard anywhere from 4-5 inches of rain and the flash flooding caused damage to their home.”
County Mayor Brent Greer noted the property is under the jurisdiction of the Tennessee River Basin Authority and Watkins and County Road Superintendent Richie Chilcutt said they would follow up to see if there was any help the family could receive from the Authority.
In other business, the commission approved allocations to 19 non-profit organizations totalling $89,685.
