Union City, Tenn.–Four Union City High School juniors with impressive résumés have been selected as delegates for Girls and Boys State.
Tammy Huynh and Leah Kate Wisener were chosen to represent UCHS at Girls State, while Dalton Bone and Elijah Cavalier were school officials’ picks for Boys State.
Girls State will be held on a virtual platform this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while Boys State has been canceled because of the coronavirus.
GIRLS STATE
Miss Huynh is the daughter of Phong Huynh and Thuy Phan.
She has been a member of the Top 10 in her class for two years and is a member of the UCHS Magnet School Program. She is a participant in Honors and AP classes and is a member of both the Beta and Key clubs.
The daughter of Clark and Joanna Wisener, Leah Kate is and has been involved in many activities while also excelling in the classroom.
She’s a three-year member of the Beta Club and Key Club, a two-year participant with the yearbook staff, and has both played tennis and in the band.
Academically, she’s been a member of her class’s Top 10 three straight years and is a member of the 30+ ACT Club. She’s additionally won Student Excel Awards for highest average in several subjects in both her freshman and sophomore years.
Wisener was also chosen for the Rotary Club’s trip to Washington, DC.
This year’s Girls State will be held via a virtual platform over a three-day period from May 26-28. There will be multiple two-hour sessions centered around a mix of speakers that will also include interactive questions and answers and facilitated panel discussions.
BOYS STATE
Bone, the son of Brad Bone and the late Tammy Bone, and Cavalier, the son of Phil and Carol Cavalier, were chosen by school administration and teachers as Boys State delegates.
Bone has a diversified academic/activity list, as he’s been a member of his class’s Top 10 three straight years and is a member of the Magnet School Program. He also has been chosen as a Kiwanis Club Student of the Month and picked for the Rotary Club’s Europe trip.
He’s a member of the Tornado baseball team, the Beta Club, and has participated in the Walk of Hope on a school-sponsored team. Bone also is a Younglife member and a Wyldlife Leader for Middle Schoolers.
Cavalier has run track as both a sophomore and junior and also was a member of the school’s cross country team that made it to the state meet.
He’s a member of the Beta Club and additionally participated in the Ethics Bowl with his classmates.
Though there will be no convention this year, Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is traditionally a participatory program where each student becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government.
Participants are typically exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and responsibilities of a franchised citizen. Activities normally include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.
