Union City, Tenn.–The Union City High School Beta Club was recently looking for a service project, and faculty advisor Katie Parr was contacted by Dawn Thompson, mother of freshman student Cameron Thompson.

The Thompson family stayed at the St. Jude Target House – a long-term housing facility for patients that must stay at or near the hospital for more than six months – recently, while Cameron was a patient there in 2013.

The facility does not charge rent or utilities, but there is a need for basic pantry items that are provided.

The UCHS Beta Club collected a number of those necessities and used monetary donations from the community to buy more for the drive.

Cameron and his father, Greg, happily picked the items this week at the school from Beta Club officers Claire Tanner, Wade Clendenin, Will Hogan and Nigel Smith and were set to deliver them.

“It really was cool that the kids already knew something about the project, because of Cameron,” Parr said. “They felt like they were helping a place that had already helped one of their own classmates.

“The Thompson family has been doing something with our middle school Beta Club and St. Jude for a number of years. We were glad to keep it going.”
