Paris, Tenn.—Burgers’ Smokehouse, located in California, Mo., announced today it will be acquiring Clifty Farm Country Meats of Paris, one of Henry County’s oldest businesses.
Burgers’ Smokehouse and Clifty Farm are similar in that they both have lengthy histories beginning with small family-owned businesses that have grown over the decades.
In a press release issued today, Burgers’ Smokehouse said it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Clifty Farm. The combined companies would be the largest producer of country ham in the nation, according to the press release.
Steven Burger, President of Burgers’ Smokehouse said, “The purchase of Clifty Farm fulfills a key strategic initiative to dramatically reduce risk by providing multiple locations for the production of country cured hams. Clifty Farm has been a tough competitor over many years and is a leading country ham brand in the grocery channel. We now look forward to combining the strengths of our organizations to better serve the needs of our customers in all sales channels.”
Clifty Farm President Michael Murphey said, “We are proud of the business we have developed and believe that becoming part of the Burgers’ Smokehouse team is the best next step for our company. I look forward to continuing with the company when the sale is completed,” said Murphey.
The sale is expected to be complete in early 2019 and with that, Burgers’ Smokehouse will operate 5 plants across Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Burgers’ Smokehouse has been curing country hams for over 90 years, including whole, sliced, and cooked country hams for customers across the U.S.
According to its website, Burgers’ Smokehouse was started in California, Mo. In 1927, by the Burger family. They are the largest producer of cooked country ham in the U.S and a leader in portion control country ham for the foodservice channel. The company additionally sells smoked & sugar-cured hams, dry cured bacon, smoked poultry, summer sausage, and over a dozen more specialty meat items to grocery stores, restaurants, and directly to consumers through mail order and e-commerce.
Clifty Farm Country Meats was first established in 1954, by Truman Murphey and the company has a long, storied history in Henry County. Their business grew with outstanding products and trusted relationships, through three generations of the Murphey family. Their product portfolio includes country cured ham, bacon, sausage, barbecue and other specialty items.
Clifty Farms was awarded the Business of the Year in 2013 by the Paris-Henry County Chamber of Commerce.
