Driver Injured After Car Struck By Semi

Mayfield, Ky.–One driver of a car having mechanical issues was transported to the hospital after it was struck by a Freightliner semi and trailer in Graves County Sunday.
At approximately 4:55 PM on Sunday, the Graves County Sheriff’s Office responded to a semi and passenger car collision on Interstate 69 about five miles north of Mayfield.
The investigation showed that Lasha Britten, age 22, of Houston, Texas was northbound on Interstate 69 and was driving slowly due to her vehicle having mechanical issues. According to witnesses and Britten, she had her emergency flashers activated on her vehicle.
At that same time, 52-year-old Rodney Goodwin of Paducah was northbound on Interstate 69 operating a 2019 Freightliner semi truck and trailer. Goodwin came up behind Britten and did not realize that she was traveling at a slow speed, according to the press release from the Graves County Sheriff’s Office.
Goodwin tried to avoid colliding with Britten but was unable to do so. The front of his semi impacted with the rear of Britten’s Nissan which caused the semi truck to travel over the top of the back section of Britten’s car.
After the impact, Britten’s car was forced off of the roadway in to the grassy area of the shoulder of Interstate 69. Goodwin was able to bring his semi truck and trailer to a stop on the shoulder of Interstate 69.
Britten was transported from the scene to Jackson Purchase Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Goodwin was not injured in the collision. Both lanes of northbound Interstate 69 were shut down for about half an hour and one lane was closed until approximately 7:00 PM so the scene could be cleared.
Both vehicles were removed by local tow companies due to being inoperable after the collision.
Deputy Brendan Weldon is investigating the collision. He was assisted by Sheriff’s Office Captain Jeremy Prince, Mayfield/Graves County EMS, Mayfield/Graves County Fire and Rescue and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Department of Highways.
The Sheriff’s Office thanks other motorists who stopped to render aid at the scene before first responders arrived.
