Union City, Tenn.–Sixth-graders at Union City Middle School were busy in the first nine weeks of classes with several projects.
LuAnn Barkley’s science class explored an Engineering Design Process (EDP).
Unofficially titled “Look mom, no hands,” the assignment task was to develop a technology tool.
Students were challenged to stack six cups in a pyramid with that tool, working simultaneously with each other to create that special pyramid. As part of the objective, they were not allowed to touch the cups with their hands.
Members of the class improved their designs by investigating, brainstorming ideas and making prototypes.
Jennifer Bruff’s sixth-grade math class again learned the ins and outs of having a checking account as part of the banking business.
Students were given a mock account with checks to write to fellow classmates. Surprise bills were delivered as well as bonus checks from the principal.
Mrs. Bruff graded the students on the accuracy of their checking accounts with math skills such as precision and accuracy, as well as attention to detail and following instructions — part of the real-world application process.
