UCMS Class Creates Travel Brochures

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director
Union City, Tenn.–Students in Renee Hempel’s 8th grade Advanced English Language Arts (ELA) class have become quite the world travelers.
After reading John Steinbeck’s “The Pearl,” Hempel assigned her Union City Middle School group a project to design travel brochures to any foreign country they desired.
Among the must-haves for each pamphlet were photos of the chosen country, maps for travel, climate conditions of those countries and in-depth details of land masses.
A list of tourist attractions was also encouraged to be a part of the brochure, along with other details.
More than a dozen countries in all were spotlighted in the pamphlets.
Students used a variety of computer programs to design their respective flyers.
Hempel, the UCMS Teacher of the Year in 2018-19, praised her students for their efforts and enthusiasm while completing their respective projects.
“They all worked very hard for several days on this project,” she said. “I told them to be creative and produce something that looked like it came from a travel agency.
“The students worked very hard to get everything on their brochures just right. I think their hard work really shows in their final product.”
