Tiptonville, Tenn. – On Monday, September 30, Tennessee First Lady Maria Lee will be in Lake County to help beautify the grounds of Reelfoot Lake State Park. Registration and volunteer information to serve alongside Lee is available by calling Reelfoot at 731 253 7652.
Lee will then travel to Lauderdale County to build toys for the children of the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse.
In May, Lee launched Tennessee Serves, an initiative designed to encourage Tennesseans to serve one another and volunteer in their communities with a special focus on distressed counties. Lake and Lauderdale Counties are both federally-designated distressed counties in Tennessee. Through Tennessee Serves, Lee also issues monthly service challenges to motivate Tennesseans to serve in various ways. This month, Tennessee State Parks partnered with Lee to host Tennessee Serves volunteer events in parks across the state.
Reelfoot State Park is kicking off National Public Lands Day and TN Serves Project with the welcome from the First Lady of Tennessee and a hike around the boardwalk. The event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This will be a quarter of a mile walk to observe Reelfoot Lake and overlook the Cypress Forest along the water’s edge. Next they will begin the service project of beautifying the Museum area and preparing for one of Reelfoot Arts and Crafts Festival –on of the state’s largest festivals–that will be held the following weekend.
This will include mulching around the Eagle and Hawk aviaries, setting up fall décor consisting of hay bales, pumpkins and mums. We will also be picking up sticks, small debris and sweeping of sidewalks. Dress accordingly to the weather, and wear sturdy foot wear as the temps this time of year can exceed 90 degrees. We will meet at the State Park Visitor Center at 11:00am and work until 1:00pm.
