Buchanan, Tenn.—The Henry County High School Fishing Team of Mercedes Ellis and Gage Sherrod placed 2nd in the Bassmasters High School Nationals, held this weekend at Paris Landing State Park.
Ellis and Sherrod caught 48.5 pounds, coming in just a pound and a half short behind the winners Grayson Morris and Tucker Smith of Birmingham, Ala., whose total catch weighed 50 pounds.
Ellis and Sherrod were 7th at the end of the day Thursday, but pulled away from the pack Friday, coming in to the final day at 2nd place.
Boat Captain Daniel Ellis said, “I cannot say how proud I am of these two and how hard they fished under such tough conditions. Just to make the top 12 is something in itself. They represented Tennessee very well and Henry County High School. Hold your heads up with pride you two.”
The HCHS fishing team is only three years old.
