Union City, Tenn.—The City of Union City is getting serious about grass clippings.
The city has issued a notice that it will begin issuing citations to residents or mowing businesses that leave grass clippings in the street, the curb and gutters.
City officials noted that the ordinance has been in place since February of 2007 and that the public should be “well aware” of it by now.
Citations could result in fine of $50.
Officials noted that all the grass that gets blown into the streets washes into the storm drain systems in town when it rains causing the drains to stop up which in turn leads to flooded roads and yards.
“It is also a hazard to motorcycle and bicycle riders not to mention it’s against the law,” they said.
