Kuttawa, Ky.–A heartwarming photo from the scene of a fatal crash early this morning in Lyon Co., Ky. has gone viral.
In the photo, Lyon County Fire Marshal Bill Compton comforts a dog on his lap as both sit on the roadway after the crash. The dog–named Lucky–would not leave his owner’s side. The photo was taken by Lyon Co. Highway Supervisor Jordan Yates.
According to Kentucky State Police, a man from Vergennes, Illinois, was killed in the crash, while others in the 2007 Freightliner recreational vehicle were injured. Lucky belonged to a man who was trapped in the vehicle and Compton comforted the dog as emergency crews rescued him from the wreckage.
Preliminary investigation shows Kyle W. Ellis, 30 of Vergennes, IL., was operating a 2007 Freightliner Recreational Vehicle pulling an enclosed car trailer, traveling east on I-24 and for an unknown reason ran off into the median. Ellis overcorrected pulling back into the eastbound lanes of traffic, before striking an embankment and overturning. Ellis was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Lyon County Coroner.
Michael W. Herring, 27 of Vergennes, IL. was airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center for his injuries. Donald W. Ellis, 49 of Vergennes, IL. Was transported to Lourdes and later flown to a Nashville hospital. Nicki J. Meadows, 28 of Du Quoin, IL. was transported by ambulance to Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, KY.
