Paris, Tenn.—Residents of the Atkins-Porter Neighborhood gathered for an Earth Day tree planting at the new Atkins-Porter Botanical Garden Monday afternoon and two of the trees were dedicated to the memory of the late Gaines Hedges and Walt Peterson.
Garden Chairman River Byrd said two more trees are available for adoption as memorials. After Byrd demonstrated the proper way to plant a tree, the group divided into teams to plant all the trees. A total of six trees were planted Monday including varieties of Japanese Maple, Crape Myrtles, Dogwood, Cherry and Red Bud.
A pavilion and winding pathway already have been constructed at the Atkins-Porter Community Garden, which is located on Jackson St.
