MURRAY, Ky. — Murray State University’s Department of Occupational Safety and Health welcomed representatives from the Kentucky Labor Cabinet recently to meet with students and faculty, discuss internship opportunities and more.
In attendance were Kentucky Labor Cabinet Secretary David Dickerson, Deputy Secretary Michael Swansburg, Jr., Department of Workplace Standards Commissioner Dwayne Depp, and Federal-State Coordinator Chuck Stribling. The group met with Murray State faculty and students individually throughout the day, then discussed internships and career opportunities in a larger session.
“I appreciate Murray State inviting us here,” Dickerson said while speaking to students. “You’re here because you know the OSH program here is one of the top programs in the commonwealth.”
He said the KLC has built a strong Department of Workplace Standards, and they’re constantly looking to see how they can continue that success.
Dickerson said the KLC is always looking for students and recent graduates for its various internship opportunities, as well as full-time employment positions after college.
Ryan Cannady, a graduate OSH student from Belleville, Illinois, said he spent time with the KLC representatives discussing possible options for students after earning their degrees.
“I also learned much more about the KLC’s role in the compliance side of OSH,” Cannady said. “Most of the time, OSH education focuses on the employer side of things, so this was a great way to round out my experience in the Murray State OSH program.”
The Murray State University Department of Occupational Safety and Health provides curriculum options which include a bachelor of science in the area of occupational safety and health (safety and environmental tracks); master of science in occupational safety and health with concentrations in safety management, industrial hygiene and environmental, including an online program with a concentration in safety management; a technical minor in occupational safety and health; and a certificate in emergency management. These programs are accredited by the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission of ABET (ANSAC/ABET).
