UNION CITY, TENN. – Discovery Park of America in Union City, Tenn. has announced the line-up for the 2019 Rhythm On The Rails Summer Music Series, a family-friendly series which will be presented on Thursday evenings from May 2 to June 27. The concerts will take place around the park’s train depot and south lake and will feature local performers and bands along with bands from the University of Tennessee at Martin’s Department
of Music.
The south gate will open at 5 p.m. and the first set will begin at 5:30 p.m.
In addition to the live entertainment, those attending the series will be able to enjoy catch and
release fishing from the lake, food trucks, a cash bar and a chance to stroll through the park after
hours.
Admission will be free for DPA members and those who have already purchased admission to the
park that day and five dollars for non-members. Revenue generated will help offset the costs of
refurbishing DPA’s 1916 Ford Model-T that will go on display Fall 2019.
“The mission of DPA is to inspire children and adults to see beyond,” said Scott Williams,
president and CEO of the 100,000 square-foot museum and 50-acre heritage park. “This series is
a natural progression of all the great concerts and music-themed exhibits that have been hosted
here through the years with that mission in mind.”
Regional bands performing during the festival include Mandy Vixen and Gas Station Chicken;
Rita and the Romeos; Brent Hinson and Matt Crosson; Steve Short and Keith Brown; “Kicking
Keys;” The Chad Karnes Band; JC Clark and Linda Bryant and Jim Jones and the Kool-Aids.
Other entertainers include Molly Lovette; Coby Watts; Katie Thorpe Tohn, Jason Kizer, Jim
Bondurant and, closing out the series, Phillip Coleman.
In a first-time collaboration, bands from the University of Tennessee at Martin will perform
throughout the series. Included will be the UTM Jazz Combo, the UTM Brazilian Choro
Ensemble, steelworks and Coffey and Carithers, a duo featuring David Coffey who is Chair,
Department of History and Philosophy, and David Carithers who is Chair, Department of English
and Modern Foreign Languages.
“We’re excited about the opportunity for two great local institutions, DPA and UTM, to come
together to provide our region a chance to celebrate some of their favorite local performers, while
also discovering new music they haven’t heard before,” said Dr. Julie Hill, Chair, Department of
Music at the University of Tennessee at Martin, who has also received worldwide recognition as a
performer and scholar.
The 2019 Rhythm on the Rails Summer Music Series is sponsored by Blue Bank Resort,
