UCES Enrichment Classes Get Hands-On Project Experience At Discovery Park

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn. Students in Sherri Moore’s first- and second-grade enrichment classes will soon put what they learned on a field trip to Discovery Park to good use.

Moore’s Union City Elementary School students visited the Towers of Tomorrow exhibit at DPA earlier this week, learning from specialist Russell Orr about how each of the towers was constructed.

They will later use what they learned back in their own classroom while building their very own LEGO robots. Those robots will have multiple moving and spinning parts and will be programmed by the students.

In the class’ DPA visit, Orr explained the process and how there was considerable math and engineering involved, rather than just “clicking together” blocks.

Students then got their own opportunity to create something unique, using LEGOS.

Some showed the Tennessee spirit by assembling the “Power-T,” while others constructed replicas of Neyland Stadium.

Some students pieced together towers of their own or created monsters. Several of the girls opted for houses, complete with elevators, mounted televisions, pink couches and rose bushes for a finishing touch.

Parents will be invited to UCES for a special LEGO robot presentation later this spring.
