Union City, Tenn.–Everybody loves a good superhero.
In Emily Cross’ fifth-grade advanced math class, those characters solve equations rather than crime.
Challenged to create a graphic novel with math superheroes who perform mathematical missions to save their city from a dreadful math villain, Mrs. Cross’ students presented their project work this week.
Students’ presentations were required to include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Using decimals, fractions and whole numbers was also part of the assignment.
In full and varied costumes, students presented their respective characters Thursday and Friday – each drawing applause from their classmates afterward.
The Math Computations Comic Books project has proven to be a favorite of Mrs. Cross’ classes over the years.
“We’ve done it before, but this is the first time I’ve allowed the students to dress up to fit the role of their particular story,” she said. “I do think they’ve enjoyed that, and it helps get them more involved with their story.
“I give them a new project every nine weeks and — when I do a survey at the end of the year — normally, this one is their favorite.”
