Union City Claims 13A Sweep Of Bradford

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director
Union City, Tenn.–The Union City girls put into motion what they had practiced over the last few days.
“The last two days, we didn’t even talk about Bradford,” Lady Tornado head coach Chuck Reedy said after his team had beaten the Devilettes 45-32 Friday night at Marty Sisco Gymnasium. “We just concentrated on being physical and practiced so much harder.”
The physical approach worked as the UC girls improved to 6-8 overall and squared their District 13A record at 2-2 with the win.
They’ll host Class 2A power Crockett County (14-2) – winners of eight straight – Saturday night.
Union City boys made it a sweep in Friday’s nightcap, overcoming a lackluster first half with a big third quarter in what was ultimately a 68-45 triumph over Bradford.
The Tornadoes (10-7, 4-0) will look to avenge an earlier 11-point loss to the Cavs in Saturday’s second game.

Union City led virtually wire-to-wire against the Devilettes in Friday’s opener, building as much as a 20-point cushion in the early stages of the fourth quarter.
“Our effort was so much better. Whatever mistakes we made were aggressive mistakes,” Reedy added.
“And I can live with whatever our results are as long as we play with that type of effort.”
Three buckets by Jada Williams in the third stanza helped UC expand a 19-11 halftime lead to double digits and Sophie Theobald capped off a night that saw her hit 11-of-14 free throws with a 7-for-8 second-half effort to help the Purple and Gold pull away.
Kendall Davis bottomed a 3-pointer to begin the Lady Tornadoes’ third-quarter surge, then sank another triple with 4:50 to play to put her team comfortably up 42-22.
Theobald led a balanced attack with 13 points, one more than Williams. Both Davis and Shyon Stephens ended up with nine points apiece.

Ben McMillan took over for the Tornadoes in the third quarter after Union City could manage but a 26-24 lead at the intermission.
McMillan caught fire from outside, hitting four 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the telling frame when he scored 19 of his game-high 26 points.
UC outscored Bradford 26-7 in that frame to stretch its lead to 52-31 heading into the fourth quarter.
A dozen different Twisters ended up scoring in the contest.
Tyler Walton joined McMillan in twin digits with 10 points.
