By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–The Union City High School Beta Club welcomed 34 new members Friday in ceremonies at the Civic Auditorium.

Current club officers Claire Tanner (president), Wade Clendenin (vice president), Will Hogan (secretary) and Nigel Smith (treasurer) all addressed the UCHS student body during the gathering, as did principal Jacob Cross.

Dr. Jerald Ogg, the longtime Department of Communications director at the University of Tennessee at Martin, gave an inspirational address to all in attendance.

Among the new members were Carter Bondurant, Harris Cagle, Cedrion Cook, Kamia Cross, Jayda Disney, Daniel Edwards, Emily Fields, Amber Finch, Khia German, James Gregory, Addy Hooks, Gaby Jones, Hope Kennedy, Hogan Kern and Elizabeth Lattus.

Also inducted were Warren Malone, Ben McMillan, Amiya Mitchell, Gracie Mobbs, Abby Nicks, Silas Petty, Aidee Rodriguez, Lydia Runions, Arden Stanley, Maggie Suiter, Olivia Tanner, Kobe Terrell, Sophie Theobald, Ashlyn Thomas, Sara Ullrich, Joanna Velencia, Ella Virgin, Annie Grace Wade and Carter Watts.

There were 61 members of the Beta Club before Friday’s induction ceremonies.

Members of the Union City High School Chorus entertained at several venues Friday.

The group, under the direction of Allison Butner, caroled in the halls of the high school and the central office and had impromptu performances at a handful of other places about town.

The chorus is scheduled to present its “White Christmas” performance Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m.

A three-student team of Union City Middle School students brought home two awards from Saturday’s first-ever Robotics Competition, hosted by the Obion County Public Library.

The students — Christopher Lamb, Madeline Underwood and Hayden Moon – won second place among eight teams to have participated in the competition. They also received a special award, recognizing their overall teamwork, creativity, sportsmanship and courtesy, and were the only team given that particular honor.

Back in September, UCMS 7th- and 8th-grade science teachers Karyn Hill (7th) and Beverly Dones (8th) were contacted by OCPL director Michele Barnes on behalf of the University of Tennessee at Martin Computer Science Department after UTM had received a grant from LEGO Corporation.

In an effort to help Middle School teachers increase student awareness and interests in STEAM and STEM programs and activities, a number of area schools were invited to participate in the inaugural  Robotics Competition.

Students were not allowed to take the robots that they built from the library premises. Therefore, students and sponsors met frequently from September until the competition was held Saturday.

The UCMS trio overcame many obstacles and hardships with their efforts, persevering for their noteworthy accomplishments.

The Union City High School and Middle School cross country programs got together Friday evening to celebrate the accomplishments from their recently-completed seasons.

Food and fun at the home of Dr. John and Katie Parr – the coaches of the two programs – was enjoyed by all team members.

The two high school squads were specially recognized for advancing to the state meet in early November – the boys’ squad making their second consecutive appearance, and Katelyn Emond for advancing from the UC girls’ team.
