Fort Donelson To Remain Open, But Visitors Cautioned

Dover, Tenn.–Fort Donelson National Battlefield is running on a full schedule, and the manhunt that continues in the eastern part of Stewart County / western Montgomery County is not in the proximity of Fort Donelson.
Officials at Fort Donelson said, “Though the overall search has largely transitioned to lands south of US 79, we do advise that those traveling on this primary highway continue to:

  • Be alert
    -Yield to all emergency vehicles
-Follow directions or detours that uniformed/identified officers may give
    -Keep your vehicle doors locked
    -Do not pickup hitchhikers
-If needing to stop, remain secure in your vehicle or at your destination
-Do not stop to “watch” the activity”

For those intending to travel to or from US 79 via the popular and scenic Hwy 46 / Red Top Road route, crossing by ferry at Cumberland City, a change in plans is necessary as the ferry has been closed because of the search, and many roads of the remote area are closed to access.
Should there be a change in search direction that should warrant additional advisement to visitors/travelers, Fort officials will advise accordingly.
Fort Donelson Superintendent Brian McCutchen said, “We at Fort Donelson NB express our appreciation to the numerous local, state, and federal officers – including Fort Donelson National Park Rangers – that are supporting the respective Stewart and Montgomery County Sheriff Departments, as they cautiously tread the rough and wooded topography, seeking to bring an end to the tragedy and concern of recent days.
We are pleased to have visited with the many hundred of visitors that visited with us – by automobile or paddlewheel river boat – we do wish to wish you safe travels and regardless of where you are, and what activity that you are exploring — we continue to encourage everyone to be alert of their surroundings and to travel safely.”
