Union City Fall Sports Roundup

Union City, Tenn.–Union City had its moments, but still couldn’t get past nemesis Halls, dropping a 3-0 prep volleyball decision Thursday at Marty Sisco Gymnasium.
 
The Lady Tornadoes, who had several players under the weather, fell 25-13, 25-17 and 25-14.
 
UC is now 3-2 on the season.
 
First-year coach Jodi Powell did praise her troops for both battling through health adversity as well as improvement made since the last time the two teams played each other a month ago in a scrimmage.
 
Ashley Kate Cooley had 10 saves and 16 assists for the Twisters, while Aleigha Beth Keeling had 15 passes to set. Jy’Rese Thompson had seven hits.
 
The Union City jayvee team also came up short, losing 25-8 and 25-13.
 
Marlee Johnson had 23 passes and four blocks, while Abby Suiter recorded eight hits and 10 passes to set.
 
Aubree Keeling was lauded for both offense and defense.
 
Union City has three road matches on the schedule for next week, at Humboldt Monday, at Trenton Tuesday and at South Gibson County Thursday.
 
 
Three UCMS runners
Have Top 10 finishes
 
The Union City Middle School track teams ran their first 1.5 mile race of their inaugural season Thursday at Camden.
 
Cole Suiter took first place honors in the JV portion of the event, finishing with a time of 10:36.
 
Suiter’s teammate on the girls side, Daisy Sanchez, was fourth, clocked at 12:42.
 
Myranda Parr was seventh, Lennon Bing 10th and Saranasia Hayes came in 15th.
 
Ada Rogers had UC’s best finish in the varsity competition, placing 10th with a time of 11:08.
 
Union City will be back in action on Monday, running at Milan.
 
Tornado linksters thump Westview
By large margin at PMCC
 
Union City was 45 strokes better than Westview in prep golf Thursday at Poplar Meadows Country Club.
 
The Twisters shot 169, far better than Martin, which came in at 214.
 
Tyler Walton was the match medalist with a 39. Joyner Caldwell finished with a 42 and both Carter Walton and Kyle Herrell registered 44s.
 
Wilson Harris had a good scoring day with a 41. Mason Reed and Miles Odle each carded a 46 and Gabriel Qualls shot 57.
 
Seven UC girls played nine holes, led by Meg Kizer’s 53 – one shot better than Gussie Parks.
 
Addi Hooks also fired a 53, Sloan Bearden shot 57, Julianne Becton carded a 59, Olivia Tanner finished with a 60 and Abi Nicks registered a 63.
 
Union City’s next match is Monday at PMCC against South Fulton and McKenzie.
 
 
Jr. Twisters fall at D’burg;
Open home season next week
 
Kyrell Littleton finished with 142 yards and Union City’s only touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the UC Middle School Tornadoes dropped a 26-6 decision at Dyersburg in football action Thursday.
 
Littleton hit paydirt on a two-yard plunge.
 
The Twisters threatened to score in both the second and third quarters, but were stopped by penalties and a turnover.
 
Jacob Arnold added 56 total yards to the offensive cause.
 
Defensively, Gage Smith had a team-best five tackles, while Miguel Sanchez Cruz was in on two stops.
 
UC (0-2) will play its first home game of the year next Thursday when Medina comes calling.
