Union City Energy Authority has received several calls from customers who have been contacted about unpaid electric bills.
UCEA Chief Financial Officer Scott Gilliam says a group has “spoofed” the Energy Authority’s phone number, making it appear to the recipient that the call is from UCEA’s phone number, 885-9212, when in fact it is not.
In this scam, the caller advises the customer that they have 30 minutes to make a payment or utility services will be disconnected.
Gilliam says the Union City Energy Authority will never contact customers giving a 30 minutes deadline for payment and also will not request a customer to provide a credit card/debit card number over the phone.
Customers are advised that if they receive a call such as this, they should hang up and call Union City Energy at 885-9212 to confirm whether they have any balance due.
Customers of Union City Energy Authority are encouraged never to give a credit or debit card number over the phone for payment of the electric bill.
Gilliam asks that if customers have any questions regarding this matter, to call Union City Energy at 885-9212 and speak with a Customer Service Representative.
