Union City, Tenn.—The Obion County Schools board of education Monday night made no immediate decision on how to hire its next Director of Schools. Members said they would make their decision as to whether they want to hire from within or again go through the state school board association.
Director of Schools Russ Davis made a surprise announcement Friday during the board’s orientation session that he was resigning. His resignation is effective June 30 and he was not at Monday’s board meeting. He is not expected to attend any more meetings before his resignation is effective.
His resignation reportedly is due to health reasons and he told board members it was time for the district to go in a different direction.
Davis has worked for the school system for several years, as a career education director and teacher.
Until a new Director is hired, the district’s Assistant Directors Dale Hollowell and Nancy Kennedy will be in charge of day-to-day duties.
In other business during the meeting, tenure was granted to 17 teachers:
Black Oak Elementary – Kayce Jones
Hillcrest Elementary – Amanda Dawkins, Tina Forbes, Cari Moore, Chanda Peal
Lake Road Elementary – Michelle Allen, Emily Berner, Julie Cunningham
Obion County Central High – Jonathan Byrd, Johnathan Nolan
Ridgemont Elementary – Vonda Cary
South Fulton Elementary – Melashia Aguilar, Deanna Porter, Amanda Wilder
South Fulton Middle/High – Melanie Curlin, Kimberly Jackson, Mary Jane Wiseman
The board reappointed Keisha Hooper as its representative on the athletic committee; and accepted the lone bid for $67,700 from Billy Rogers Plumbing for classroom HVAC upgrades at South Fulton Middle/High School; and accepted the low bid of $23,405 from Cape Electric for Electrical Material Upgrades.
