Rental Scam Ongoing In Paris

Paris, Tenn.—The Paris Police Department was made aware on March 20 that there is an ongoing online scam involving multiple rental properties located in the city limits of Paris.

With the scam, the owner of the property has it listed for sale on several online sites, but other sites also listed the property without the owner’s knowledge, according to Captain Ricky Watson.

The complainant advised they responded to the ad and were sent a rental agreement. Watson said the rental agreement didn’t look right to the complainant so he brought it to Paris City Hall.

Upon investigation, it was determined to in fact be a scam and almost cost the victim $1,000.

Watson said the city of Paris asks that anyone doing business online do a little research “and if the deal sounds too good to be true, it usually isn’t.” He said please contact the Police Department if you don’t feel right about a purchase, sale, or something involving money. “This includes the app ‘Let Go’, Offer Up, Craigslist and Facebook.
