BPU Approves 2018 Budgets

By Shannon McFarlin WENK/WTPR News Director
Paris, Tenn.—The Paris Board of Public Utilities (BPU) approved the 2018 Fiscal Year budgets this morning which show no increase in electric rates, but continue the five-year increases for the water and wastewater departments that were already approved.
Net income for the electric department will be $804,200, while the net income for the water department will be $233,400 and for wastewater will be $207,815.
Water rates will increase $1.00 per month on the base charge and 25 cents/1000 gallons on the consumption side.
Wastewater rates will increase $1.00 per month on the base charge, 50 cents/1000 on the first 2,000 gallons used, and 25 cents/1000 on all consumption 3,000 and greater.
The budgets were already reviewed at last month’s meeting and board members have been reviewing them in detail over the past month.
The only change from what was presented last month was a change in one of the capital expenditures for the water department. Instead of buying a new backhoe, the department will be purchasing a dump truck, which meant a $8,000 decrease in capital expenses.
The board approved the low bid of $2.9M from the Norris Brothers Excavating Co. of Crossville for the Johnson Park sewer basin rehab project that has been planning for some time.
BPU General Manager Terry Wimberley said, “We’re finally set to move forward on the project, which is a $3M project.”
Ten contractors sought plans for the project, but only three turned in bids for it, he said.
In other business, the board approved a Resale Rate Schedule Substitution Agreement with TVA. Anytime there is a rate schedule change, it must be approved by the board, Wimberley said. The change is to the addition of new LED lighting for the outdoor lighting schedule.
