Paris, Tenn.—The new park in the Atkins-Porter neighborhood in Paris now has a name.
Members of the Atkins-Porter Neighborhood Association Tuesday night voted to name the new neighborhood park the Atkins-Porter Community Park. The park is located at 311 Jackson Street where the city and neighborhood had worked together to demolish a long-standing eyesore there earlier this year.
Plans are to create a park with a gazebo, bricked walk-ways, signboard, trees, and benches and the Atkins-Porter Association is working with the USDA on funding for the park. The Association board has ownership of the property.
In other business during the meeting, which was held at the new Old Paris 5 and 10 Event Center in downtown Paris, City Building Inspector Mike Brown presented a program on city code enforcement, building inspections and other neighborhood concerns.
Brown said, “We are proactive in dealing with violations and when we are out and about, we do take note of things in the city.” He said anyone with concerns should call City Hall.
Members also discussed the upcoming Valentine’s Day Fundraiser, set for Feb. 14, also at the 5 & 10 Event Center. It will include an evening of good food and entertainment and will benefit the park project.
The inaugural event will feature hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and music at 6:30 pm, followed by a three-course French dinner at 7 p.m. and assorted, freshly made desserts. After-dinner entertainer Bob Valentine promises tales of Valentines past. Auctioneer Junior Staggs will complete the evening with a brief live auction. Auction items include an Up-Up in the Air Plane Ride, Six-Months of Kelli’s Fancy Breads, a Festive Pontoon Boat Trip & Historic Tour on the Tennessee River, a hand pieced, locally made quilt and more.
Tickets for the event are $75 per person. Tables of six are available for $420. Tales of eight are $560. For tickets, please contact Ed Roberts at 731-336-0279. Only 50 tickets are available for this gathering.
