(Nicole Bonham, the wife of Weakley County Sheriff’s Deputy, Derrick Bonham, issued the following statement on the life of her husband. Deputy Bonham was shot and killed in the line of duty responding to a disturbance call in Martin. The suspect is in custody. A ‘Sea of Blue’ will be conducted tonight (Sunday, February 1) and his funeral will be held Monday).
Derrick Bonham gave his life in the line of duty serving as a sheriff’s deputy for Weakley County. He wore his badge with honor, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others.
To me, he was a loving husband—my partner, my best friend, my heart. But above all else, Derrick was a devoted father. His kids were his everything. Every decision he made, every sacrifice he accepted, was rooted in his love for them and his desire to give them a life filled with safety, laughter, and pride.
Derrick deeply loved the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office and the Greenfield Police Department. Those departments were more than just where he worked—they were part of his family. He was proud to serve alongside the men and women of both agencies, and he believed wholeheartedly in the mission and brotherhood they represent.
Our family is incredibly grateful to the WCSO and Greenfield PD for the overwhelming love, support, and care they are showing us during this unimaginable time. We also want to thank everyone for the messages, phone calls, prayers, and for everything that has been brought to our family for us to enjoy. Your kindness and generosity have wrapped us in comfort when words fall short.
Derrick lived a life of service, integrity, and deep love. While our hearts are broken, we will continue to honor him by remembering the man he was, the father he adored being, and the legacy of love and bravery he leaves behind.
