From Fort Donelson National Battlefield in Dover:
With help from some much-needed sunshine, our dedicated team is making progress breaking through the “impenetrable and bulletproof” layers of snow and ice left behind by last weekend’s storm.
However, most paved surfaces—including roads, parking areas, sidewalks—and unpaved trails remain covered in a thick layer of ice. Combined with near-zero evening temperatures, these conditions lead to frequent re-freezing, requiring us to use all available resources—from heavy equipment to hand tools—where appropriate.
We’re working toward
a phased reopening of priority areas and will continue to share updates here and on our website:
In the meantime, please stay safe and warm. As you do, take a moment to enjoy some post-storm images of the battlefield on the Fort Donelson Facebook page—it’s beautiful, but not a safe place to explore right now.
