Union City Middle School cross country runner Brody Fields placed sixth in a field of 218 runners in the West TN Middle School Championships on Saturday to earn a spot in the independent state championship.
Fields, an 8th grader, will now compete in the Knoxville Youth Athletics All-Division State Championships on Oct. 25 at Victor Ashe Park.
Fields, who also earned a spot in the event last year, ran the two-mile course at the WTMSC in Memphis in 11:21 to place near the front of the pack.
First-year UCMS runner Owen Shannon finished 157th in a field with a time of 15:04.
