Kindergartners at Union City Elementary School got an early jump on National Fire Prevention Week recently.

Class members took a visit to the local fire station, learning the basics of the public service department and getting an up-close look at equipment in preparation for NFPW – which takes place Oct. 5-11.

Students were able to climb aboard fire engines, examine equipment worn by personnel, and have their questions answered by firefighters.

“We practice and have drills at school for emergencies, and we also want our students not to be frightened by what they may see in real life,” said Lindsey Beth Atkins, one of seven teachers to chaperon the field trip.

“They got the full experience. From the sights to the sounds, we feel like this will help them understand and stay safe in any situation they might be confronted with.”
