The Union City High School band got off to a splendid start to the 2025 competition season.
“I believe this was a great foundation to build off of for the rest of our season,” veteran Golden Tornado director Jason Deem said after the Purple People brought home a slew of awards from the Hornet Invitational at South Gibson County High School last weekend.
Unaffected by the distractions of homecoming week at the school, UC won first place in Band, Percussion, and Color Guard in Class 4 of the Medina competition. The Twisters were third in their division in the Drum Major category.
Overall – out of 22 bands – the Marching Tornadoes claimed top honors in Color Guard, third place in Percussion, and fourth place in Band.
“Homecoming always brings a unique set of challenges, but I was pleased with our focus and overall performance,” Deem added.
Union City will host (but not compete in) its own UC Invitational on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium with more than 20 schools set to attend and perform in the day-long competition that will stretch into the evening.
The Marching Tornadoes will next compete in the Tournament of Champions at Collierville High School on Oct. 4.
