Union City High School golfers will carry momentum into the last week of the regular season.

The Tornadoes posted an 18-stroke victory over visiting Gibson County Tuesday afternoon at Poplar Meadows Country Club in their final home match of the year.

UC, which beat rival Westview and West Carroll on Monday, will play three times next week on the road before entering district tournament play on Sept. 22.

Brody Riley fired an even-par 36 to earn medalist honors and pace the Twisters’ 159 team total on Tuesday. Gavin McGuire carded a 38, and Paul Martin Tohn registered a 40 for UC. Coop Frankum rounded out the Tornadoes’ score with a 45.

Stephen Herrell shot 45, Jake Lattus finished with a 49, and Garrison Bunch had a 52.

Colin Pack came in with a 39 for GC, which shot 177 as a team.

Annie Beth Cruce (51) and Stella Turner (54) continued to work on their respective games for the Lady Tornadoes. Gibson County does not have a girls’ squad.

UC plays at Persimmon Hills in Sharon – the site of the District 14A Tournament – twice next week against Westview. The Twisters also have a rematch scheduled with GC at Dyer on Tuesday.

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

UC 3, South Fulton 0

The Lady Tornadoes rebounded from a loss and a subpar showing against Milan on Monday with a dominating effort against SF to remain unbeaten in District 13A play.

UC (13-2, 7-0) won in straight sets vs. the Lady Devils, 25-10, 25-7, and 25-16.

Madie Theobald racked up 24 assists, Gracie Sims threw down 17 kills, and Addison Carr had eight service aces to pace the Twister girls.

Clare Atwill contributed seven aces, and Crickett Washburn finished with six kills.

Union City piled up 31 kills and 22 aces while committing just 19 errors in the three games.

The Lady Tornadoes’ scheduled Thursday night home match against Halls has been postponed at the Lady Tigers’ request and will be made up as part of a doubleheader at UCHS on Sept. 25.

UC will play host to Dyersburg on Monday night.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Lake Road 9, UC 1

Union City took a brief 1-0 in the bottom of the first, but didn’t score again while losing for the second time this season to the Lady Generals.

The Lady Tornadoes managed just three hits – a triple and a single by Austyn Dilday, and a single by Ella Grace Howell. Amanda McPhearson scored UC’s lone run.

Dilday and Charlie Smith each surrendered three earned runs in the pitching circle for the Twister girls.

Now 6-4 on the season, Union City plays at Hickman County on Thursday.
